Costs, cure times, epoxy vs. polyaspartic, DIY vs. pro — straight answers before you spend a dollar.

Frequently asked questions

How much does garage epoxy flooring cost in Orange County?

A professionally installed epoxy floor on a typical two-car garage generally runs $1,200–$4,800, depending on slab condition, coating system, and prep work. Polyaspartic upgrades and metallic finishes cost more. Roughly $4–$10+ per square foot installed for a standard system. DIY kits cost $200–$400 but fail far more often.

How long does a garage epoxy floor last?

A professionally installed system with proper prep commonly lasts 10–20 years in a residential garage. Prep quality and coating thickness matter more than the brand of resin.

How long before I can drive on a new epoxy floor?

Epoxy typically needs 24–72 hours before vehicles return; polyaspartic topcoats cure faster, often within a day. Foot traffic is usually fine sooner.

What's the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?

Epoxy is the classic system: affordable, hard, chemical-resistant. Polyaspartic is a newer topcoat that cures in hours, resists UV yellowing, and handles hot tires better. Many installers use epoxy as the base and polyaspartic as the topcoat.

Why do DIY epoxy kits fail so often?

Almost always skipped surface prep. Epoxy needs a diamond-ground, moisture-tested, repaired slab to bond. Hardware-store kits applied over slick, dirty, or damp slabs typically peel within a year or two.

Can you recoat a garage that already has epoxy?

Usually yes. Failed coatings get ground off down to sound concrete, the slab is repaired, and a new system is applied with proper prep. See our repair & recoating page.

Is epoxy slippery when wet?

Glossy epoxy can be slick when wet. Slip-resistant aggregate or aluminum-oxide grit can be added to the topcoat where wet traction matters — garages with wash-down routines or wheelchair access usually get this.

Does epoxy work in hot, sunny weather?

Yes — OC's climate is good for epoxy installs. Polyaspartic topcoats are the better choice for sun-exposed areas since they resist UV yellowing.
